Northern California Voices at the 2025 Youth Leadership Summit
We’re thrilled to share highlights from the 2025 Youth Leadership Summit, held June 15-21 at American University in Washington, D.C., and hosted by Sister Cities International.
This year, nine outstanding students from Northern California representing Walnut Creek, Menlo Park, Davis, Piedmont, and Alameda, joined peers for a week of immersive learning, cultural exploration, and global connection.
At the summit, students participated in rigorous, interactive training workshops led by diplomats, professors, and leadership experts. The workshops covered diplomacy, global awareness, and career building, and enabled students to hone abilities that they will utilize well into the future. One of the highlights at the summit was a simulated diplomatic session at the U.S. Department of State. In this simulation, students became actual diplomats and addressed current world issues, firsthand learning the intricacies of international negotiation.
Splitting suite-style dorms at American University, they also experienced a slice of college life, complete with shared living spaces, campus dining, and high-energy atmosphere. Beyond the classroom, they explored the capital’s cultural wealth by visiting landmarks, museums, and historic sites to enhance and bring context to this wonderful leadership experience.
Pride runs deep for Northern California. These young leaders have embodied our region’s authenticity, curiosity, and drive. They return home not only with memories and new friends but also with the inspiration and tools to continue striving to shape the future of their communities and the world.
The Northern California Chapter of Sister Cities International supports attendance at this annual program via the Gilberto Antoliano Ricarte Youth Leadership Scholarship which provides funds to cover the program registration fee, which includes lodging, meals and daily programs and activities.
The 2026 Youth Leadership Summit program information is now available. The 2026 application deadline is Feb. 1, 2026.
